The Southern California Filk Convention

Town & Country Hotel, San Diego
October 18-20, 2013
The Lighter Side of Filk & SF
Music Guest of Honor: Tom Smith
Tom Smith is arguably the funniest man in filk [and probably in the top ten in folk music overall], and demonstrably the fastest songwriter. He has been witnessed to listen to a new song and have a reply composed by the end of it, ready to perform as the next song for listeners to hear. He has brought audiences to wistful tears with his tribute to the late Jim Henson, and then had them rolling in the aisles with a song about Wile E. Coyote. In addition, his ventures into digital music have brought new listeners to the field, through things like the Funny Music Project. His music has been on NPR and on Dr. Demento, and in his 20+ years of performing and recording songs, he's produced some remarkable music.
Interfilk Guests: Kirstin Tanger and Volker Tanger
An early German filk fan, Kirstin learned to play guitar when the local guitarist moved away. She founded the German filkzine, "Let's Filk About", started the German Filk Fund to bring foreign guests to German filk cons, and was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame in 2002.
Volker is an impressive guitarist and percussionist. He is also an organizer. He runs the German filk mailing list, and the German filk podcast on filk radio. He coordinates tech at FilkCONtinental and is the tech team at the newer German Filk con, DFDF. Volker and Kirstin run a dealer's table at German filk cons, as well as an online shop to make filk CDs available to German filkers.
Toastmaster: Tim Griffin
If you've been to the filk at Tim's place, or heard him sing at various regular SF cons, you probably don't need any other introduction. But if you do need one, visit his website, click the "Music" link in the top row, choose an album, and listen to a few songs. Tim is a very good songwriter and an even better performer. And of course a punster, as evidenced by one of his album titles: The DaVinci Chord. What more could you want in a filker?
In addition to everything you've come to expect in a local SF convention like Conjecture, we will have old ConChord favorites, including:
Kazoo awards: That's right: awards made out of plastic kazoos and… other ingredients. See Kay Shapero's photos of past Kazoo awards for examples. The Totally Tacky and Tasteless Revue: Do you find Weird Al Yankovic songs too tasteful? Do you like horrible and inappropriate filk songs? Do you wish you could have been on the Gong Show? This is the event for you.
Concerts by our guests and other notable names in the community. One Shots and Twofers! Dare to share!
Filkers from up and down West Coast and elsewhere, including some regular LAFA attendees. Open Filk Circles 24 hours a day
